alternative definition added about 10 years ago by Istvan Miko
"The area that is posterior to the scutellar plate." this definition has been changed because:"The part of the scutellum that is posterior to the scutellar plate" is on the one hand just a bit too wide, since it will have to be a protruding lobe to be referred to as a lobe, and then it would have to protrude from something, and that is typically from the smooth outline of the scutellum, so that anything that extends backwards past the anterior margin of the metanotum, or past a straight sloping or vertical posterior denotation of the scutellum, is a lobe. On the other hand the definition is also too narrow, because some taxa (like Diglyphosema) have a protruding posterior lobe of the scutellum with a scutellar disc that extends all the way to its posterior end... "The part of the mesoscutellum that protrudes posteriorly as a distinct shape beyond any smooth or straight posterior outline, especially when protruding posteriorly past the anterior margin of the metanotum" or something like that." M. Forshage
