The old definition was incorrect:"The anatomical space that is delimited by the posterior, concave surface of the hypostoma." The proboscidial fossa is not an anatomical space, but a scrobe that accommodates the proboscis.

The hypostoma is sunken inwards from the plane of the occiput and genae to form the lateral and dorsal walls of the proboscidial fossa, a cavity that receives the proboscis when retracted. This cavity has been given a wide variety of names including maxacava(MacGillivray 1923), trophicava (Salman 1929), oral fossa, oral chamber (Plant and Paulus 1987), buccal cavity (Gauld and Bolton 1988), and hypostomal cavity (Hensen1988).
